The day of reckoning for candidates and issues in the general election arrives today, the final day of voting for president, state and local offices, and statewide and local ballot measures.
In Pierce County, the decisions of county voters will be reported as early as 15 minutes after the official close of voting Tuesday. The online edition of the Dispatch (dispatchnews.com) will provide news coverage of outcomes of local interest, including Pierce County Council, assessor-treasurer and executive, state senator and representative in the Second District, and levies for the town of Eatonville and Fire District 23.
Although there are no polling places in Pierce County's all-mail voting system, the old 8 p.m. closing time is still in effect. The county elections department plans to start posting early returns at 8:15 on its web site at www.piercecountywa.org/results. Updated tallies are scheduled for 9:15 and 11 p.m.
Once-a-day updates will be announced by the elections department at 5 p.m. each weekday through Nov. 26. The results will become official Nov. 27.
County election officials have predicted an 80 percent turnout of the 442,983 registered voters in the county. It's expected about half will cast their ballots by mail and the other half will hand-deliver them to 27 official drop boxes. High volumes of voters are expected at the drop boxes and voting centers. The latter are official locations staffed by county election department personnel to assist voters who might need a replacement ballot if they lost theirs. Drop box and Voting Center locations can be found at www.piercecountyelections.org
