Expect busy lakes for fishing opener

The new lowland fishing season starts this Saturday, with thousands of anglers expected to be on the water, shorelines or docks in the quest for their first freshwater catches of the year. And there will be plenty of fish to potentially hook, both on opening day and potentially through the rest of the six-month season. The state Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) has stocked lakes on both sides of the Cascades with nearly 16 million trout and kokanee. The fish include 2.5 million catchable trout, 115,000 jumbo trout tipping the scales at more than 10 pounds apiece, and approximately 50,000 triploid trout each averaging 1.5 pounds. In addition, there are millions of smaller trout that were stocked last year and have since grown to a catchable size, according to WDFW officials. Details about the tocking at lakes in Pierce County and elsewhere are available at wdfw.wa.gov/fishing/plants. Something for anglers to note: The fishing regulations for 2014-15 will remain in place through June 30, so the current rules pamphlet from WDFW is still valid.
