Fire destroys house

An Eatonville-area home burned to the ground in a fire Thursday afternoon. The blaze in the 41700 block of 109th Avenue Court East was reported at about 3 p.m. Nobody was at the residence at the time of the fire, and no injuries were reported, officials said. The house was heavily in flames when the first firefighters arrived, and it began collapsing shortly afterward. Because there were no fire hydrants nearby, water had to be shuttled to the site by tender truck from Eatonville, said Chris Grant, deputy chief of South Pierce Fire and Rescue. The home and all its contents were a total loss, according to authorities. The American Red Cross is assisting the family, Grant said. An investigation by Pierce County fire marshal of the fire's cause was continuing. Firefighters from South Pierce, Graham Fire and Rescue, Eatonville Fire and Fire District 23 responded.
