The state high school football tournaments begin this week, and south Pierce County will be well-represented by two hot teams. Graham-Kapowsin, which hasn't lost this year, is in the 4A field, and Eatonville, riding a four-game winning streak, is part of the 1A show. They punched their tickets last week with victories in the district playoffs GÇô G-K 61-26 over Snohomish and Eatonville 23-20 over La Center. Both teams are hoping for another run that will take them as deep or deeper as last season, when G-K and the Cruisers made it all the way to the semifinals of their respective tourneys. This year's hopes for statewide glory will get their first-round test when Graham-Kapowsin hosts Mount Si this Saturday at 1 p.m. at Art Crate Field and Eatonville tangles with Colville. The latter contest is scheduled for Saturday at 1 p.m. in Colville.
Mount Si (7-3) vs. Graham-Kapowsin (10-0)
It's win and go to the quarterfinals to face the winner of the Issaquah-Lake Stevens first-rounder, or lose and go home for the season. That was the scenario in the district playoffs last week, too. Mount Si's Wildcats did their part with a 17-14 decision over Jefferson, winning on the Raiders' home field in Federal Way. Mount Si (7-3) has won its last three games, somewhat in typical fashion compared with the rest of the Wildcats' season GÇô by holding down the oppponents to 14 points or fewer. That's been the case in six of Mount Si's victories, and in three of them, the opposition has been held to eight points or less. Against Snohomish last Friday, G-K's season-high for points in a single game included three touchdowns in each of the first two quarters, putting the Eagles ahead 42-7 at halftime and out of reach. Kobe Merriweather ran for four of those scores, with a 32-yarder the longest of the jaunts.
Eatonville (6-4) vs.Colville (8-1)
Whoever wins will face the winner of the Wright-versus-Royal opening-round contest on either Nov. 20 or 21 in the quarterfinals. Colville has won its last three games by a combined score of 137-35. Eatonville's own winning streak has turned the Cruisers' fortunes around after three straight losses in mid-season. With the streak and a state berth on the line last Friday on La Center's field, Eatonville led 14-7 at halftime on Tucker Poll's four-yard touchdown run and a 21-yard scoring pass from Jacob McCormick to Brooks Moeller. The Cruisers stayed ahead the rest of the way, thanks in part to Logan Moose's short touchdown run in the third period and, in what turned out to be the decisive points, Brandon Morton's 25-yard field goal in the fourth quarter. Dalton Morgan scored all three of La Center's touchdowns GÇô one running and the other on passes from Zach Galster.
