Highway closure may last until Friday

Part of State Route 7 near Ohop Valley Road could be closed until this Friday as a result of Monday's mudslide. The extended closure is "related to additional heavy rain and continued movement of material above the roadway,GÇ¥ Doug Adamson, a spokesman for the state Department of Transportation, said Tuesday. The slide was reported at about 7 a.m. Monday, resulting in no injuries to motorists but blocking the highway near Ohop Valley Road and 416th Street East. Workers using heavy machinery removed an estimated 100 yards of mud, rocks and other debris, but the affected section of highway was closed by DOT for safety reasons, Adamson said. Officials are determining the likelihood of more slides before deciding when to reopen the highway, Adamson said. During the closure, traffic on SR-7 is being detoured through Eatonville via Eatonville Cutoff Road and State Route 161.
