State Route 706 near Ashford is among several state highways that were closed at one time or another Monday by mudslides caused by heavy rain. The state Department of Transportation (DOT) said SR-706 was cleared and reopened to traffic after it was blocked in both directions near Copper Creek. DOT road maintenance crews have assessed the conditions of each highway as part of the efforts to reopen them, a spokesman for the agency reported. SR-706, leads to the Nisqually entrance of Mount Rainier National Park, provides one of the main accesses to the park.
