Homebuilding near airport waits for clearance

Eatonville Town Council members are moving carefully toward a possible approval of a housing project next to the town's airfield. During a public hearing Jan.26 on Aviator Heights, the council asked for more information on issues such as stormwater management and access to the proposed homes via Weyerhaeuser Road.. The hearing is scheduled to resume at a council meeting Feb. 23. Aviator Heights has been on the drawing board in one form or another since 2007, when its original developer envisioned private pilots keeping airplanes at or near their homes at Swanson Airfield.. That proposal has been abandoned and a new developer has been seeking the council's approval since 2013 for a project that includes lots for 21 single-family homes. The number was 23 until two lots were removed from possible development because of aviation-related concerns raised by the Federal Aviation Administration. In addition, two proposed homes will be restricted to a single story. A row of commercial buildings at the south end of the airield already exists.
