The Northwest Pacific Regional U.S. Figure Skating Championships GÇô possibly part of someone's Olympic dream GÇô will be staged over six days starting Thursday at Sprinker Recreation Center in Spanaway. The competition Oct. 3-8 will feature 319 skaters at varying levels of competition. Of those, 105 will try to earn a spot in the Pacific Coast Sectional Championships, which will be held in November in California. The regional and sectional events lead to the national championships next January in Boston, Mass. GÇô the final qualifying competition before the selection of the 2014 U.S. Olympic team. "With the Olympics next year, this is a very exciting time for the skating world,GÇ¥ said Renee Myrtveldt, competition chairwoman for the Northwest regionals. The skaters converging on Spanaway are from Washington, Alaska, Idaho, Oregon, Wyoming and Montana. They range in age from pre-teens to young adults in their 20s. The top flight of competitors will vie for trips to the sectionals. This is the first time the newly renovated ice rink and Sprinker facility has been the scene of a regional meet since 2000. The competition is being organized and hosted by Lakewood Figure Skating Club. Competition will start in earnest Saturday, with events scheduled from 7:30 a.m. through nearly 11 p.m. A competition schedule is available at lakewoodwinterclub.com Paid admission is $35 for an all-championship pass or $15 for a one-day pass. Children under 6 will be admitted free. Other regionals are being held in New York, Connecticut, California, Texas, Iowa, North Carolina and Kentucky.
