Connie Bacon, who has held the office for 16 years, is halfway home in her bid to remain a Port of Tacoma Commissioner. Bacon is the clear frontrunner in early, unofficial results of the primary election that ended Tuesday. Her 34,681 votes put her ahead of second-place Eric Holdeman, who has the edge to be Bacon's opponent in the general election in November, when the winner of a new four-year term as commissioner will be decided. Holdeman polled 16,590 votes, according to the Pierce County elections department. Four candidates were in the only race in the primary that involved voters countywide. In addition to Bacon and Holdeman, Dave Dormier and Andre (Doctor Dre) Young drew 14,464 votes and 3,771 votes, respectively.. With voters in many areas having only one or two races on their ballots, relatively small voter turnouts were expected for the primary. In the last few days before the official election day, election officials predicted 19 to 22 percent of the 445,760 registered voters countywide would cast ballots. The Port of Tacoma collects property taxes throughout the county and is a source of economic development and business for Pierce County and Washington Bacon, a former executive director of World Trade Center Tacoma, is an advocate for growth of the port's business by expanding trade opportunities. Holdeman, who is critical of the port's overall management, is a former director of security for the port and currently is director of Pacific Northwest Economic Region's Center for Regional Disaster Resilience.
