Kaelin repeats as state shot put champ

Justin Kaelin's storied track and field career at Eatonville High School came to a fitting end last weekend in Cheney. For the second consecutive year, the senior won the shot put title in the 1A state high school meet at Eastern Washington University. His mark of 57 feet 11.5 inches was 18 inches better than runnerup Aaron Obert (56-5.25). Kaelin, who led all high school competitors statewide with a toss of 59 feet 5.5 inches in April, completed a nearly perfect 2015 season in the event. His only loss this year was in the Oregon Relays, a regional invitational meet. He added a third-place finish in the state meet's discus at 154-9. Also notching top-five finishes for the Cruisers were: " Daisey Newman, close to being a double champion. She finished second in the girls shot put at 39 feet and a quarter-inch (the winner was Jordan Spradlin of Montesano at 42-7.75) and second in the javelin at 136-6 (about a foot short of winner Kaelyn Shipley of Kalama). Newman also was fifth in the discus. " In the girls high jump, Brailee VandenBoom finished third with a school-record 5 feet 4 inches. " The 4x400 relay team of Mason Call, Isaac Boetcher, Josehia Hotz and Thomas Ridgway placed fifth in a school-record 3:30.94.
