Man dead, deputy hurt after standoff

A Spanaway man was killed and a Pierce County Sheriff Department deputy was wounded in shooting during a standoff last week. The incident occurred at a storage facility Dec. 3 in the Spanaway area at Garage Plus Storage on Mountain Highway East. Authorities said Chase Houston, 30, died from a gunshot wound. It's believed the fatal bullet was fired by one of three deputies involved in the shooting. They later were placed on administrative leave, a standard procedure when police incidents involve shooting. The wounded deputy, who wasn't identified, avoided life-threatening injury when a bullet struck him body armor on his chest and was deflected into his arm, authorities said. According to the Sheriff Department, Houston was armed and considered potentially dangerous when he barricaded himself in a storage unit. Phone calls from witnesses at the facility to 9-1-1 brought a SWAT team to the site, and Houston reportedly opened fire on the officers. They fired back and later found him dead inside the unit. Before the incident began, Houston's wife reported his behavior had raised concern for her safety and the couple's daughter, officials said.
