Mudslide closes SR-7

A mudslide has closed a portion of State Route 7 in rural south Pierce County for at least Monday and possibly longer, according to state highway officials. The slide was reported at about 7 a.m. Monday, resulting in no injuries to motorists but blocking the highway near Ohop Valley Road and 416th Street East. Workers using heavy machinery were removing an estimated 100 yards of mud, rocks and other debris, but the affected section of highway was closed for safety reasons for the rest of Monday and possibly into the Tuesday morning commute hours, said Doug Adamson, a spokesman for the state Department of Transportation (DOT). Officials are determining the likelihood of more slides before deciding when to reopen the highway, Adamson said. During the closure, traffic on SR-7 is being detoured through Eatonville via Eatonville Cutoff Road and State Route 161. The apparent cause of the slide was at least partially attributed to recent heavy rain, Adamson said.
