New joins tradition at State Fair

The Washington State Fair has kicked off its annual 17-day run in Puyallup with all the customary, traditional attractions and some new twists. Here are some things you might want to know before you go: " Animals from all corners of the globe will gather at the Animals of the World exhibit the first five days of the fair (Sept. 5-9). Some of the exotic critters in Barn J will include cream draft horses, Kune Kune pigs, a watusi, Nigerian dwarf goats, camels, a zebra and an emu. " Kids 5 and under are admitted free every day. " Parents can chill in the landscaped Classic Coaster Park while their children are on rides. " A 21-meter dome screen will show films of the Apollo 11 moon landing, the pyramids in Egypt and other events and sights. A smaller dome will have 3D gaming, and a still smaller dome will have scenes of extreme outdoor sports. The Visitor Dome is a separate-ticketed attraction ($6 for all three experiences, $5 if bought in advance at thefair.com). " See Russ Leno create carved works of art out of giant pumpkins Sept. 12-13 and 20-21 between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. at the Planting Patch. " Girl Scouts are hosting a memory game show at their booth on the first floor of the Pavilion. Test your memory. " Pierce Transit will provide bus and shuttle rides to and from the fairgrounds for visitors who park free at South Hill Mall, Tacoma Community College and Lakewood Towne Center. For more information, check www.PierceTransit.org. " Free with the price of fair admission are mini-Coca Cola cans with your name on them. Go to the Coke kiosk. " Information and tickets for concerts is available at www.thefair.com, at (888) 559-3247, or in person at the box office. Gates for the performance will open at 6:30 p.m. One concert update: JT Hodges has been added as a guest star to Tobey Keith's show Sept. 20. The fair opened last Friday and runs through Sept. 21.
