New moose on the block

A newborn moose GÇô the latest in a recent baby boom at Northwest Trek GÇô stayed close to its mother after its birth June 12 at the wildlife park. The male is the second moose calf born at Trek in the last 11 months and brings the number of moose there to five, including its parents and a female sibling. Dave Meadows, a Trek animal keeper, said the baby appears to be healthy and has been nursing hungrily. Starting in May, more than two dozen additions to Trek's "herd" have been born. They include five bison calves, two elk calves, two bighorn sheep lambs, three beavers, several deer fawns, and an uncounted number of geese. In addition, two newborn woodland caribou calves are living behind the scenes until they're big enough to live with the other animals in the park's free-roam space, officials said.
