In one of several earlier-than-usual openings at Mount Rainier National Park, White River Road opened to the public last Friday, giving access to White River Campground and providing a route that's popular with climbers attempting early-season summit climbs on the east side of the mountain. The road opened on May 23 last year. This year, a low snowpack is allowing earlier access to many areas of the park. For instance, the road between White River and Sunrise is scheduled to open June 5. In "normalGÇ¥ years, there would be enough snow to keep Sunrise Road closed until July 4. Parts of Stevens Canyon Road were accessible as of May 1, and May 22 is the targeted date for a full opening. That's also the scheduled opening date for Mowich Lake Road. The Henry M. Jackson Memorial Visitor Center at Paradise began daily operations May 2.
