People and pooches back Cancer Society

By Pat Jenkins The Dispatch Thirty-five people and eight dogs participated in a recent Bark for Life fund-raiser in Eatonville for the American Cancer Society. Cierra Richards, who organized the event, said $130 was raised through entry fees and donations. The two-hour gathering Aug. 23 at Mlll Pond Park honored the caregiving qualities of canine companions during a non-competitive walk for dogs and their owners to raise funds and awareness in the fight against cancer. The event also included pet adoptions and prizes for dogs that were the biggest, had the best personality, were best-dressed and jumped the highest. Winners included Mojo (best-dressed), who's owned by Sharon and Julie Saez, Koda (biggest dog), who belongs to Patti Fuchs, and Wilson, a golden labrador whose highest jump trophy went home with owner Meghan Dietrich. Pet Pros and PetSmart provided pet information, product samples and gifts for the participants. Eatonville Veterinary Clinic provided an on-site veterinarian. Richards got the idea for the event through her work with the Miss Pierce County-áScholarship-áProgram (she was Eatonville's representative in the pageant last spring while a senior at Graham-Kapowsin High School) and the Cancer Society. "I thought it would be a great-ámatch for the town,-ágiven its dedication to Relay for Life,GÇ¥ she said, referring to the 24-hour walkathon that's been staged in Eatonville for 14 years. Richards said she appreciates all who volunteered and participated in Bark for Life and is "excited to start the planning for next year's event.GÇ¥
