Pivetta Hoffman running for state rep

By Pat Jenkins The Dispatch Amy Pivetta Hoffman, a Bethel School Board member, hopes a seat in the Legislature is in her future. Pivetta Hoffman, who also is a lawyer, announced last week that she will run in this fall's election for state representative in the Second Legislative District. She'll seek the office that was resigned in February by Graham Hunt. Running under the political party label of Independent Democrat, she said she will "always put the views of my district ahead of party leaders. I'll work with other Democrats and any Republicans who want to get serious about solving our thorniest public policy challenges.GÇ¥ Pivetta Hoffman is the only non-Republican in the race so far. Andrew Barkis, a Republican who was appointed Feb. 16 to replace Hunt, has said he will be a candidate for the seat. Hunt, a Republican, planned to run for re-election but resigned after indiscrepancies in past public statements he made about his military record and experiences were challenged in the news media and called into question by colleagues in the Legislature and political foes. The Second District covers south Pierce County, including the Graham, Eatonville, Frederickson (where Pivetta Hoffman and her husband, Jason, live) and Roy areas, and part of Thurston County. Pivetta Hoffman was appointed in 2012 to the Bethel board to fill a vacancy created by a previous member's resignation. She was one of eight applicants for the appointment. She retained the seat in the 2013 election and was re-elected last year, running unopposed for a four-year term. As an attorney, Pivetta Hoffman's South Hill-based practice specializes in business law. "Tough problems" she said she would address if elected to the Legislature include "overcrowded and underfunded schools, a congested transportation system, and high property crime rates in our unincorporated communities." She also said "every local business should have the workforce and infrastructure they need to innovate and grow. Senior citizens should feel safe in their own homes, and our veterans and military families need the support they've earned.GÇ¥ Pivetta Hoffman is a board member for the south county branch of the Tacoma-Pierce County Chamber of Commerce. She previously served on the Frederickson Land-Use Advisory Commission and the Frederickson-Clover Creek Community Council.
