Democrat Marilyn Rasmussen and Republican Jim McCune are the survivors of a three-way primary election race for a Pierce County Council seat.
In results released by county election officials Tuesday night following the close of voting, Rasmussen and McCune were the top two choices of voters, setting the stage for the general election in November that will be their second head-to-head contest in two years. Rasmussen received 44.8 percent of the votes to McCune's 42.8 percent.
McCune, a state representative from Graham, won re-election to the Legislature in 2010 by beating Rasmussen. A legislator since 2005, McCune is giving up his state post because the redistricting process cut him out of the Second Legislative District. He's seeking a county government office for the first time.
Rasmussen is attempting a political comeback. After 28 years in elected office, most of it as a state representative and state senator, she lost a re-election bid for the Senate in 2008.
The council seat coveted by Rasmussen and McCune is opening because Councilman Roger Bush can't run again due to term limits. The seat represents south Pierce County areas, including Eatonville, where Rasmussen lives.
The other primary election hopeful was Corey Drury, a Republican and first-time candidate. As the third-place finisher, he's now out of the race.
