Selling property won't help school district's budget

By Paulette Gillardi I would like to begin by thanking everyone who has attended public meetings, written letters and e-mails and made phone calls to the School Board to give input on the upcoming budget decisions for the Eatonville School District. I know my fellow board members agree that the respect each person has demonstrated is greatly appreciated. After the meeting last Wednesday, I recognized I should have made a clarifying statement as a followup to a gentleman's input concerning the vacant houses the district owns in town. Selling them would not help the budget issue because the state does not allow the use of "capital projects funds" to be used for anything except capital projects (facilities). No funds can be borrowed from or transferred into other areas of need. The same is true of the bond money that is being used for the transportation department, field improvements, etc. I am blessed to have had the privilege of spending my entire life in the community and have enjoyed many years of volunteering in the school district as a volunteer classroom teacher assistant, PTO/PTA officer, sports, room mother and School Board member, to name a few. I am passionate about the Eatonville School District and am thankful that our students are being served by caring and supportive staff and parents in all three elementary schools. I believe our K-12 education is one of the finest in the state, and I will continue to serve our district in any way I can. Thank you for your support and encouragement.
Paulette Gilliardi is an Eatonville School Board member.
