Six Eagles, seven Cruisers in Mat Classic

Mat Classic XV, the holy grail of high school wrestling's 2012-13 high school wrestling season, will include strong representation from the Graham-Kapowsin Eagles and the Eatonville Cruisers. Graham-Kapowsin will have six competitors in the 4A portion of the state tournament at the Tacoma Dome, while Eatonville will be sending seven in the 1A field. GK's contingent, which includes defending state champion Ian Steen, qualified by finishing in the top three of their weight classes in the 4A regional meet in Auburn last weekend. The Eatonville delegation earned its tickets to Tacoma with top-four finishes in the 1A regionals in Castle Rock. Steen won the 145-pound title in the regionals and was voted Regional Wrestler of the year. Teammates who also captured their weight championships included Spencer Schroeder at 106 pounds, Corde Ferreira at 138, and Mack Busey at 160. Adam Romano and Joe Gomez finished third at 132 and 195, respectively, to also advance to the state tourney. Two Eatonville wrestlers won individual titles in their regionals GÇô Tylor Brown at 182 pounds and Wyatt Gustason at 220. The other state qualifiers among the Cruisers are Oscar Trinidad (132) and Chase DeMoor (285), who finished in second place, third-place finishers A.J. Eversaul (120) and Luke McNeley (145), and fourth-place Dylan Mann (152). (Read more in the Feb. 13 print edition of The Dispatch)
