Students attend women's sports conference

Sixty female high school students from the Bethel School District attended the recent Women in Sports Leadership Conference. The students from Graham-Kapowsin High and Spanaway Lake High participated in workshops and listened to former female athletes talk about ways that athletics helped them develop skills to be successful today in their careers. The presenters also reinforced the need for goal-setting, teamwork, dedication and perseverance. Kelly Stephens-Tysland, a member of the Unted States' 2006 bronze medal-winning women's hockey team in the Winter Olympics, was among athletes that the Graham-Kapowsin and Spanaway Lake contingents met. Stephens-Tysland talked about her struggles playing hockey with men before there were many female hockey teams. Other presenters included University of Washington assistant basketball coach Adia Barnes, Seattle University women's basketball coach Joan Bonvicini, former UW basketball player Kayla Burt, sports agent Susie Jarosch, andn Kelsey Nagel, a University of Pacific soccer player. The conference was held Feb. 3 at the Shoreline Conference Center.
