Tournament road ends for Eagles

For the second year in a row, Graham-Kapowsin High School's football team made a deep run in the state tournament, only to be derailed by its first loss of the season. In a battle of unbeaten teams, Lake Stevens prevailed 49-14 last Saturday at Art Crate Field. The outcome advanced Lake Stevens to the semifinals of the 4A tourney and brought down the curtain on the Eagles in a way with which they're all too familiar. A year ago, Graham-Kapowsin GÇô also undefeated GÇô reached the semifinals before losing to Chiawanah. One week short of the same scenario as last season, the 2015 campaign ended for the Eagles after they'd reeled off 11 wins in as many tries, including two in the district playoffs and opening round of the state tournament. Lake Stevens also was 11-0 entering last weekend's showdown between two of the last four undefeated 4A teams in Washington. And quarterback Jacob Eason had a big role in keeping the Vikings' record spotless for another week. Eason, a senior who has committed to starting his college career next fall with the University of Georgia, threw four touchdown passes. The first one put his team ahead to stay 14-7, breaking a 7-7 tie in the first quarter created when G-K's Brandon Becker scored on a one-yard run after a 53-yard touchdown gallop by LS' Andrew Grimes. Lake Stevens led 28-7 at halftime, 42-7 after three periods, and scored six consecutive touchdowns overall before Elan Olmos and quarterback Dylan Morris teamed for a 55-yard touchdown pass for G-K . The Eagles were the South Puget Sound League South Division champion in the regular season.
