Twelve wrestlers among state's best

All four south Pierce County high schools in the state wrestling championships last weekend at the Tacoma Dome returned with at least one top-eight individual finisher. Among 4A schools, Graham-Kapowsin got a fourth-place finish from Chad Simonson at 120 pounds, seventh place from Mason Eaglin and Corde Ferreira, and eighth place from Gavin Eaglin, while all five of Bethel's entrants finished eighth or better, led by brothers Oscar Springsteen and Dante Springsteen, who finished third in their divisions. Spanaway Lake, also in the 4A event, was paced by Raquel Gray's third-place finish at 145 pounds in the girls' competition. Casey Brady of Eatonville, who went into the 1A tournament as a regional champion, finished fifth in the 106-pound class. In the team results, Moses Lake captured the 4A, squeaking past Lake Stevens. Bethel finished eighth and Graham-Kapowsin was 13th. Freeman took the 1A championship.
Eatonville
106--Casey Brady, fifth. First round, pinned Eathan Coleman of Naches Valley in 27 seconds. Lost second-round match to Vashon's Luke Larson, a freshman, who pinned him at 5:12. In consolation bracket, decisioned Nicholas Somerville of Highland 4-0 and pinned Hunter Nees of Freeman in 2:36 to assure himself of wrestling for third, fourth, fifth or sixth place. Wrapped up fifth place with 7-0 win over Larson. 132--Tanner Frost, a junior who entered the state tournament as a regional champion, lost 10-6 to Tysen Jorgensen of Deer Park in the opening round eventually bowed out without placing..
Graham-Kapowsin 106--Mason Eaglin, seventh. The freshman got off to a good start in his first state tournament by pinning Terrell Sanders of University at the 5:12 mark of their first-round match. After that, he lost narrowly to Ethan Rotondo of Union 5-4, beat Yelm's Mason Harrison 3-1, and lost to Will Taisacan of Mountain View 6-4. 120--Chad Simonson, third. Simonson, another freshman, started with a 4-3 victory over Gerardo Suarez of Kent-Meridian. After a second-round 9-3 loss to Nathan Swanson of Skyline, Simonson beat Yelm's Thomas Munoz, Tyler Headland of Lake Stevens and Beau Shatto of Rogers before losing again to Swanson in the third/fourth-place match, this time 3-2. 126--Michael Flores lost first-round match to Justin Sipila of Tahoma 10-3 and didn't place. 138--Corde Ferreira, seventh; Gavin Eaglin, eighth. The teammates squared off in the seventh/eighth-place match after Ferreira rolled over Mountain View's Emanuel Mendez and Eaglin lost to Ryden Fu of Tahoma 12-9 in the first round, then worked their way through the consolation bracket. Ferreira's first loss was to Blake Beard of Central Valley, the eventual champion.
Spanaway Lake boys
126--Angel Coria, eighth. Senior lost his opener to Rylan Thompson of Camas 7-5 but ralllied through the consolation bracket before eventually losing to Olympia's Layn Pannkuk 4-3.
Spanaway Lake Girls
145 --Raquel Gray, third. She shrugged off a first-round defeat and bagged a top-three finish.
