Nearly 40,000 of Pierce County's voters have already cast their ballots in the general election, county election officials said Friday.
The county has approximately 440,000 registered voters. Through Thursday, roughly the first week they could vote, more than 39,000 of them had returned their ballots by mail or at official drop boxes for collection by election workers.
County Auditor Julie Anderson, who ovesees the county elections department, has predicted a voter turnout of 80 percent by the time voting ends Nov. 6. Ballots were mailed to voters Oct. 19.
More potential voters may get involved. Oct. 29 is the last day under state law that new voters can register and be eligible for this election. To accomodate them, the elections department will be open extended hours this Saturday (8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) and next Monday (7 a.m. to 8 p.m.) for new registrations. A driveup booth will be available in addition to in-office registering at the Pierce County Annex, 2401 S. 35th St.-á in Tacoma.
The "drive-throughGÇ¥ registration "will be a first for Pierce County,GÇ¥ Anderson said. "We are expecting as many as 2,000 voters to register over these two days. I hope that citizens who aren't currently registered will take advantage of this last chance to participate in a very important election.GÇ¥
