Water accident at falls claims teenager

By Pat Jenkins The Dispatch A 13-year-old boy from Spanaway died after disappearing underwater at Little Mashel Falls June 25. Bethel School District officials identified the boy as Jayace Rosborough. He was a student at Cedarcrest Middle School. According to South Pierce Fire and Rescue chief Bob Vellias, authorities were alerted that a boy had slipped on rocks at the bottom of the falls and never resurfaced. A Pierce County Sheriff Department dive team recovered the boy after he'd been underwater for almost an hour. Paramedics attempted to resuscitate him, but "unfortunately he did not survive," Vellias said. He said family members indicated the boy wasn't wearing a life preserver and didn't know how to swim. "Our sympathies go out to the Rosborough family and all of our Cedarcrest students and staff," a message on the school district's web site stated. In addition to the Sheriff Department and South Pierce Fire and Rescue, the swift-water rescue attempt included Central Pierce Fire and Orting Valley Fire and Rescue. Little Mashel Falls, which originates from Little Mashel River, is located near Eatonville. It can be accessed by trails.
