Water emergency puts conservation front and center

An open letter from the town of Eatonville to customers of its municipal water system: Governor Jay Inslee has declared a statewide drought emergency due to a widespread lack of snowfall last winter. Water flow in surrounding rivers and creeks has dropped drastically from their usual flow this time of year, which affects the town of Eatonville's source of water. For the town, the water usage is approximately 35 percent higher than this time last year. To reduce potential hardships from water shortages this summer and beyond, conservation is critical. The town requests residents and businesses to participate in voluntary water restrictions beginning immediately to help reduce water consumption until Washington lifts the drought emergency or Nov. 1, whichever comes first. Suggested practices include: " No car washing at home. " No washing of driveways and sidewalks. " No watering of landscaping during daylight hours. " Watering of private landscaping during the night for even-numbered addresses on even-numbered dates " Watering of private landscaping during the night for odd-numbered address on odd-numbered dates " No irrigation of town parks except where to establish vegetation. Inside the home, residents can also save water by turning off faucets while brushing teeth, etc., washing only full loads in dishwashers and clothes washers, checking for leaky showerheads, faucets and toilets, avoiding the garbage disposal and composing food waste instead, and installing low-flow showerheads, faucets and toilets. Due to the existing drought emergency and the fact that the town is entering the months of the calendar year with the least precipitation and thus the highest demands on the water system, it is important to the health, safety, property and welfare of town residents to reduce water demands at this time. For further information on the voluntary water restriction, please call the town of Eatonville at 360-832-3361.
