A request for Eatonville residents to voluntarily use less water this summer got the reaction town officials hoped for. In July, customers of the municipal water system were asked to use less water. Conservation such as not watering lawns and turning on the faucets for only essential purposes would help ensure that the supply, which comes from wells and the Mashell River, would be sufficient during the summer drought. Adding to the concern was the low snowpack last winter in the mountains. Eatonville residents apparently took the water situation to heart. Town officials said last week that water consumption billed for August was 3.1 million gallons less than the billed amount for July. "Keep up the good work. Your efforts are very appreciated," the town said on its Facebook page. The decrease was a dramatic change from the same two-month period last year, when water use increased 1.7 million gallons from July to August. The town has conserved over the summer by turning off the automatic sprinklers at Nevitt and Mill Pond parks. Eatonville School District, the town's largest non-residential water customer, cut back on watering the lawns and fields at its five schools.
