What's new at school in 2015-16?

The 2015-16 school year for the Bethel and Eatonville school districts started Sept. 9 with new teachers, principals, ways of learning and facilities:
BETHEL " Anticipated student enrollment: 17,628. " Number of new teachers: 170 " Seven new principals GÇôfive in elementary schools (Chris Brauer at Centennial, Jamie Burnett at Evergreen, Kris Hillius at Nelson, Lindsey Marquardt at Rocky Ridge and Kim Kosa at Spanaway) and two in middle schools (Julie Shultz-Bartlett at Bethel and Bethany Aoki at Cougar Mountain). " Art Crate Field, the football, soccer and track and field venue, got a new turf field, running track and lighting over the summer. " A Spanish language immersion program is starting at Thompson Elementary School. " All high school students will be given an iPad, funded by a technology levy approved by voters in 2014, for school use as part of the district's digital learning initiative. " Two new curriculums GÇô ReadyGEN for English language arts and Big Ideas Math for algebra, algebra 2 and geometry. " 19 additional portable classrooms. " The district's former transportation center on 224th Street has been remodeled and turned into the Operations Support Center, the base for the maintenance department. " New classes for culinary arts and pre-pharmacy technology at Pierce County Skills Center.
EATONVILLE " Major renovation of the swimming pool at Eatonville High School. " Columbia Crest ASTEM Academy this summer received a newly paved parking lot and additional classroom space. " Eatonville High is a code.org partner and will offer computer science, coding and robotics in classes and/or after-school activities. Code.org is a non-profit advocate of computer science in schools. " Eatonville Elementary School is the new recipient of an arts grant for more focus on the arts with the help of a part-time facilitator. " Middle and high school math and science teachers are working on transforming how math and science are taught over the next three years through a Math Science Partnership grant shared by the Eatonville, Rochester and Steilacoom school districts. " The district has support from another grant for work with the state superintendent of public instruction on reshaping professional learning for teachers.
