Meredith Anne Hansen, known to one and all as Mary Anne, passed away peacefully after a brief illness on August 3, 2017, in the company of her husband and two of her three daughters. She is survived by her husband of 59 years David O. Hansen; daughters Patricia Hansen, Karen Lanphere, and Robin Hansen; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren, as well as elder brother, Albert E. “Buzz” Schacherer, and sister, Verna Schacherer.
She was born on October 14, 1936, in Glendive, Montana, to Laverna M. (nee Stott) and Joseph J. Schacherer. When she was young, the Schacherer family moved to Tacoma, Washington, where she attended school. Mary Anne married David O. Hansen in Tacoma on February 25, 1958. Due to David’s enlistment in the Air Force, the family lived in several places around the country, including Anchorage, where they survived the Great Alaska Earthquake of 1964. In 1974, David retired from the Air Force and the Hansen family moved to Eatonville, Washington.
Mary Anne was born into a creative family, and she liked to write. In later years, she wrote and published two short novels. Due to her chronic arthritis, she used the eraser end of a pencil to type her novels, which makes her accomplishment that much more remarkable. She liked to garden and loved all animals, and liked to claim that there was an invisible mark above the front door to the house so the stray cats would know where to find her.
Memorial services for Mary Anne were held Friday, August 11, 2017, at Mountain View Funeral Home in Lakewood, Washington Pastor Dan Hoffman of Eatonville Baptist Church officiated.
