Arlene Ann (Sumey) Rubert, 83, of Rochester, Washington, passed away on April 8, 2017, surrounded by her family at Tacoma General Hospital in Tacoma, Washington.
Arlene was born at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tacoma on July 5, 1933, to parents Lewis and Catherine Sumey. She was raised in Eatonville with her five siblings: Edward, Richard, Evelyn, Doris, and Myrtle. On October 25, 1952, Arlene married her brother’s best friend and the love of her life, Charles Harold Rubert. Arlene attended business school prior to marrying then worked as a secretary and city clerk through her first years of marriage. Though they began their family in Tukwila and Hoodsport, Charles and Arlene returned to Eatonville to raise their children then spent their retirement in Spanaway. After Charles passed away in 2014, Arlene resided with her son, Tim, and his family in Rochester.
Arlene was strong in her faith and certain she would see Charles again and spend eternity with her Savior.
Arlene was mother extraordinaire to seven children and a second mother to countless others. Everyone felt welcome in her home, which was alive with laughter from all who were fortunate enough to spend time there, not only from her own family, but from friends and neighbors, as well. She loved the jubilance and chaos that came with a big family and a multitude of friends.
After family, time outdoors was Arlene’s passion. Hiking, berry picking, and camping were her favorite past times. She and Charles enjoyed exploring Mt. Rainier and could often be found at NW Trek, where they were charter members. Arlene also loved baking and sharing that love with her children and grandchildren.
Arlene leaves behind seven devoted children: Rebecca (and Doug) Trieste, Mary (and Jeff) Klaiber, Timothy (and Melissa) Rubert, James (and Louise) Rubert, Daniel Rubert, Christine Rubert, and Judith Helle; twelve wonderful grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. She is predeceased by her parents, siblings, and her husband, Charles.
The family will be hosting a memorial service at Eatonville Baptist Church in Eatonville on Saturday, May 6, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. Family and friends are invited to attend.
