Student-athletes from Graham-Kapowsin and Bethel high schools made news this month on national signing day, the occasion when prepsters make their college choices official.
Football, soccer and tennis players put their names on the dotted line Feb. 1. One getting a lion’s share of attention was Foster Sarell, the nationally prominent offensive lineman from Graham-Kapowsin who is on his way to Stanford University. He announced his college destination last month while playing in the Army All-American game in San Antonio, Texas.
Matt Shook, one of Sarell’s running mates on the G-K offensive line, signed with Eastern Washington University. The 6-foot-4, 270-pounder is a catch who can play at tackle or guard, said Aaron Best, who is in his first year as Eastern’s coach.
“He has blue-collar instincts and is willing to block defenders for long periods of time,” Best said. “He’s athletic and has the feet and nimbleness we look for in offensive lineman. He has versatility, and he comes from a great program that knows what to do, how to do it, get the most out of players and win games. Matt is a great student to boot, and he’s the type of athlete we’re looking for to easily transition into our program.”
Eastern was 12-2 last season, losing to Youngstown State in the semifinals of the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision tournament.
Jacob Baker, a midfielder for Graham-Kapowsin and a two-time 4A All-South Puget Sound League selection, will continue his soccer exploits at Emory-Biddle Aeronautical University.
Bethel’s signees last week included:
• Annalisa Klein, who will play soccer for George Fox University in Oregon.
• Savon Bell-Johnson and Joehnis joyce, continuing as teammates now at Western Oregon University
• Byron Willis, who’s taking his football talents to College of the Siskiyous, a two-year school located in northern California near the Oregon border.
