Bethel in state girls hoops tournament

The players on Bethel High School’s girls basketball team have an excused absence from classes on March 1. And it’s a pretty big deal.
The Braves are playing in the 3A state tournament at the Tacoma Dome. They’ll face Mercer Island that afternoon at 2 o’clock. The losing team will bow out of the 12-team field, while the winner will advance to the quarterfinals to face Kamiakin at 2 p.m. March 2.
Bethel completed its journey to the tournament by beating Wilson 55-53 last Saturday in the regionals. It was a loser-out contest, meaning only one team would keep its dream of a state championship alive.
The four-day state tourney will conclude with the title game March 4.
Mercer Island enters Wednesday’s game with a 21-6 record. Bethel is 20-5.
Tiarra Brown scored 18 points to help Bethel outlast Wilson in their contest that was staged at Rogers High. Brown and company were in the win-or-it’s-over position as a result of a loss to Lincoln in a regionals game that would have sent the Braves to the state tournament. They made good on their second chance, however, beating Wilson for the third time this season. They also won both of the teams’ regular-season meetings as Pierce County League rivals.
Bethel has won five of its nine post-season games so far, going 2-2 in the West Central-Southwest District playoffs before entering the regionals.
