Something new, something blue for tennis courts

Bethel High School’s tennis courts are getting what school officials call a much-needed facelift this summer.
Athletic director Bryan Streleski said the last time the courts were resurfaced was 30 years ago, which is about five times the normal lifespan of six to eight years the work was given at the time.
More recently, cracks in the surface were threatening to get wider, which might have required a complete resurfacing. “That’s a pretty excessive cost, so we’re trying to seal them before they separate any more,” Streleski said.
In addition, the color of the courts is being changed from red to blue. Streleski said blue has become the norm since 2005 because it’s a better background for players and spectators to follow the ball.
The courts are expected to reopen before the start of the 2017-18 school year in September, giving the public the first crack at them. Once school teams start playing and practicing on them, “we’ll have some excited boys and girls,” Streleski predicted.
