Four top-10 performances were logged by Eatonville High’s delegation to the 2A state high school track and field championships over Memorial Day weekend. The other three were posted by student-athletes from Graham-Kapowsin in the 4A competition and Spanaway Lake in the 3A event.
The highest finish for Eatonville during the three days at Mount Tahoma High in Tacoma was Tucker Buffington’s fourth-place in the pole vault. His mark of 14 feet was the best in school history.
Zarak Scruggs gave the Cruisers another top-five effort by placing fifth in the 100-meter dash in 10.89 seconds, a personal record for him. The winner was Rodrick Fisher of East Valley in Spokane in 10.49.
The javelin turned out to be one of Eatonville best events. In the boys’ competition, Ryan Antonson finished sixth at 176 feet 9 inches, while Samantha Swartout provided the girls’ team’s top finish by placing seventh with a throw of 124 feet 1 inch. Their season-capping efforts were personal records for Swartout and Antonson.
Another placewinner for Eatonville was Madeline Madison, who was 15th in the girls pole vault at 9 feet 3 inches. Two weeks before the state championships, Madison set the school record of 9 feet 6 inches in a meet May 12.
Madison Licari of Fife captured the state title by clearing 11-9.
