The switch from Daylight Saving Time to Standard Time becomes official at 2 a.m. on Nov. 5 – this Sunday. Unless you’re up at that hour and want to fall back then, just remember to set your clocks back one hour at bedtime on Saturday.
After Nov. 5, the daylight periods will become gradually longer leading up to the return of Daylight Saving Time in March.
Meanwhile, the change to Standard Time is also a good for checking and/or replacing the batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide alarms in preparation for winter. Carbon monoxide poisoning risks can increase dramatically this time of year. As the cold sets in, gas-fired furnaces, fireplaces, and portable heating units are used for the first time in months.
Various public-safety agencies and utilities, such as Puget Sound Energy, recommend replacing smoke alarm units that are older than 10 years and carbon monoxide units older than five years. Read your manufacturer’s guide for specific recommendations.
