Weather forces mountain road closures

Winterlike weather is causing closures of several roads in Mount Rainier National Park and a road-safety warning for visitors.
In anticipation of this weekend’s “significant weather event,” park officials announced Thursday the winter-season closure Sunrise Road at the White River Campground intersection, Mowich Lake Road and Paradise Valley Road.
Also due to forecasted conditions, Stevens Canyon Road was closed Thursday evening and will remain closed through the weekend. It’s scheduled to close for the winter season on Oct. 30.
“The recent rain and snow storms could make driving hazardous in the park,” said Randy King, the park’s superintendent. “Please drive carefully and watch for rocks and debris that may have fallen onto the road.”
Park information, announcements and Mount Rainier webcams are available at nps.gov/mora. Updates on road conditions also are available through the park's Twitter feed at twitter.com/MountRainierNPS.
