Eatonville’s Taylor Curtis earns the state championship in wrestling

One day after finishing in the top 12 in the state at the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association’s Mat Classic wrestling tournament, Eatonville’s Taylor Curtis donned a different color singlet as she prepared to battle in the 2019 Washington State Wrestling Association's Folkstyle State tournament at the Tacoma Dome on Feb. 17.

Curtis, a senior at Eatonville High School who wrestles in the 18U 112lb division, made quick work of her opponents to capture the title of state champion.

In her first match, she pinned her opponent at the 1:42 mark of the first round. In her second match, she was facing a wrestler that just finished fifth at the WIAA tournament the day before. At the end of the first round, Taylor took her opponent to the ground, then her opponent's head slammed hard onto the mat. Her opponent fell unconscious. She was taken off the mat on a stretcher and was unable to continue the match.

In the semi-finals, Taylor pinned her opponent in the first round at the 1:20 mark and moved to the championship match. 

She wasted no time and pinned her opponent in 37 seconds to become the 2019 WSWA Folkstyle State Champion.
