Common sense urged when using fireworks

The Washington State Fire Marshal says Washingtonians can still enjoy consumer fireworks in a safe and responsible way, but they need to act safely, and only where fireworks are legal.

Fireworks are prohibited anywhere in Mt. Rainier National Park or the Gifford-Pinchot National Forest.
The State Fire Marshal’s office says 209 people were injured last year by fireworks — 88 while still holding them. And fireworks started 92 fires statewide, causing $161,475 in property damage.

Anyone using fireworks should remember to:

* Be Prepared – Buy only legal fireworks, have water nearby while lighting and keep pets indoors.

* Be Safe – Only adults should light fireworks. Never light fireworks in your hand and never use them indoors. Always light one firework at a time.

* Be Responsible – Clean up fireworks debris and soak used fireworks with water. Keep matches and lighters away from children.
