Annual art festival comes back to town

Glacier View Park will be the site of much summer fun during the first full weekend in August, at the 48th Annual Eatonville Lions Arts Festival.

This jam-packed event kicks off with music from The Hoots, Groovin’ Higher Orchestra and Emily Randolph.

Including fascinating featured pieces, like mosaic pieces, forest concept paintings, even woodworking, the festival is celebrating 47 years of great experiences. Participate in fun for everyone with a beer garden for adults and RC car soccer for the little ones.

Since the start of the festival in 1971, local residents remember anticipating it year after year, taking pleasure in the simple sounds of bluegrass, jazz and rock as well as mastery craftsmanship from community artists.

Now, the tradition continues on, as the festival parties into its 47th year here at Glacier View Park. Lisa Rassmussen a local artist, remembers enjoying summer festivities way back when. She is also an incredible farm animal illustrator, selling pieces for many years at the festival.

“It will be my 37th year selling art here," Rassmessen said. "I think I’ve been here the longest.”

Rassmussen recalled previous years, saying this festival holds a special place in the heart of many residents while maintaining an exciting summer atmosphere.

Currently, the Lions Club brought back roast beef sandwiches by popular demand after being missed dearly last year. Also, the club would like to announce they are accepting debit cards and cash.

Along with other fun activities, the club is hosting a 5K benefiting The Eatonville Cross Country team. Registration begins at 8 a.m. on Saturday, followed by the race at 9 a.m.

In addition to the race, Frisbee golf is an exciting family friendly activity for everyone to let loose a competitive side. Kids influenced by the artistic bug may enjoy face painting. Meanwhile, the adults may enjoy a trip to the beer garden in view of the beautiful art by Richard Jahn, a colorful forest concept painter and retired Eatonville firefighter.

Similarly, be sure to stop by to see the talented Chip Heinz, a local artist showcasing his newest diorama. Over the years, Heinz continues to inspire others with passion carved into the crevices of his work.

Headlining the same day is the Groovin’ Higher Orchestra, a 12-piece rock band, playing a wide variety of music such as funk, soul, rhythm and blues.

Furthermore, the Groovin’ Higher Orchestra features front man Steve Stephanowitz a born-to-play singer/songwriter, also an Eatonville local. Another local group, The Hoots, will be preforming with Diane Leigh, Julie Leigh, Eli Potts and Elmer Potts, bringing a unique sound and lively energy the entire weekend. Along with music, other types of festivities will be going on to keep the entertainment flowing all weekend.

Lastly, make sure to come down to Glacier View Park Friday, Aug. 2, through Sunday, Aug. 4. Music begins at noon on Friday. Stop by for friends, family, laughs and much more.

“Art and music is the backbone of American culture," said Elmer Potts, entertainment coordinator, on why this is a significant event. "It’s up to (us to) preserve that heritage.”
