12th Index Arts Festival to feature art, music, handicrafts and dancing Saturday

The town of Index is gearing up for its 12th annual Index Arts Festival, a day filled with art, music, hand-crafted items and dancing.
The festival will take place from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, August 1, at Doolittle Park (503 Avenue A) in Index. Festival highlights will include local musicians and art in various mediums including painting, sculpture, pottery, jewelry, leatherwork, spoken word, poetry readings, children's art activities and much more. The goal of the festival is to promote and encourage all forms of artistic expression while celebrating local artists from all around the Sky Valley region.
Local artists Patrick Woods and Dean Shepard will be there, along with silversmith Karin Martin and many others.
The spoken word exhibit will take place in the Index Elementary School gym, with chalk-drawing and other children's activities happening behind the school. There will be food offerings from local restaurants and chefs including vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options.
Admission and parking for the event are free of charge.
Organized by the Index Arts Festival Board of Directors, the annual festival is meant to showcase all forms of art. Additionally, the board hopes to encourage Sky Valley youth to display their talents and become more involved in the arts. Last year, 14-year-old Mia Stratman showcased a few of her brightly-colored acrylic paintings, as well as her original prints and greeting cards. From Skykomish, Stratman typically crafts her art using colored pencils and ink pens.
Live music will be performed from 10 a.m. until 10 p.m. by local musician Sean "Spare RibGÇ¥ Horst.
Attendees are welcome to bring their dogs, but they must be kept on a leash at all times. Alcoholic beverages are not permitted in Doolittle Park, but guests who wish to partake can cross the street and have a beer at the River House (444 Ave. A), which is owned and operated by the Outdoor Adventure Center.
Index is located approximately 23 miles east of Monroe along U.S. 2. Free parking will be available in the large grass lot just off the Index-Galena Road, immediately before the bridge into town. Guests are welcome to park in the lot and cross the bridge on foot.
