As two Turks wrapped up excellent track seasons at the District Track and Field Championships last week, the spring sports season came to an end, and with it, the 2013-2014 athletic year.
Steven Doubek Thursday placed fourth in State in the long jump, and at press time, Makayla McNaughton's Saturday results in discus weren't yet known.
The spring sports season didn't yield the notable triumphs that marked fall football or winter wrestling and basketball, but there were reasons to celebrate, said Sultan Sports Coordinator Scott Sifferman.
"None of our team sports advanced to Districts, but all won their last home games on senior night," he said.
Three golfers also had notable seasons.
Jake Varnell finished second in the conference tournament and made it to the last day of the District tournament. Shelby Ruiz lost on a playoff hole for a chance to be an alternate at State and Hannah Prentice also did well at Districts.
And, Sifferman said, some notable Sultan athletes have been recognized this year, as well.
"We have two baseball players that are All Conference, one 1st Team and one 2nd Team, two first team soccer players and four All Conference softball players," he said.
Fall
Football
The Sultan team had a good season, winning 3 and losing 5, making them third place out of five 2A teams and fourth out of seven overall. The Turks went on to District Championships, losing to the Mt.Vernon Bulldogs and then Jackson High before going to State as the #2 seed and losing to the Rogers Rams.
Girls' Soccer
Sultan's team struggled last fall, winning 3, losing 13 and scoring just six goals. That put Sultan in seventh of eight teams in the conference, just ahead of Coupeville.
Girls' Volleyball
Sultan's volleyball team also had a rough year, winning 4 and losing 11, putting them in last place of eight teams in the conference.
Winter
Boys' Basketball
Sultan won 12 games and lost eight, the third best record of the 2A teams, earning them a spot in the District Tournament, where they were defeated in the first round, 68-27, by Lynden, but then rallied back in a loser-out victory over Archbishop Murphy before ending the season with a loss to Anacortes.
Girls' Basketball
The girls' team had a good season as well, winning 7 and losing 13, finishing third of 2A schools and fourth overall. That earned the team a trip to Districts for the first time in three years, where they lost to Lynnwood and then Kamiak, ending the season.
Boys' wrestling
Sultan had an excellent wrestling season, with 5 wins and no losses, finishing first of five 2A schools and first of six schools overall in the Cascade Conference, earning the team the Cascade Conference title.
The team sent five athletes to State, including James MacKenzie, Bryce MacDicken, Jason Barrus, Jacob Naslund and Taylor Comfort.
James MacKenzie was an 8th place medalist at State, and the rest of the team made for an all-star lineup. It was Jason Barrus' third trip to State, his second as a Turk. Jacob Naslund has been to State twice, and has been Sub-Regional and Regional Champion. And Taylor Comfort has also been to State twice, and has been Sub-Regional and Regional Champion, as well.
Even the coach took top honors this year; Garth MacDicken was voted Coach of the Year by the rest of the 2A sub-regional coaches.
Spring
Baseball
Sultan won 5 games and lost 13, finishing in last place in the Cascade Conference and keeping them out of Districts.
Boys' Soccer
Sultan won 4 games and lost 12, totaling 9 goals in the season. They finished fourth of five 2A schools in the division, and fifth of seven overall.
Girls' Softball
Sultan had a good year, but not quite good enough to get to the District Tournament. The team won 8 and lost 9, finishing fourth of the 2A schools and fourth overall.
