On April 8, the Mariners had their home opener against the Angels. I was lucky enough that I got the VIP experience.
Four weeks earlier, I was interview by Eric Johnson from KOMO 4 News, thanks to Polly Keary, the editor of the Monroe Monitor who published my story about being unable to see the Seahawks parade because I couldn't get through the crowd in my wheelchair.
KOMO invited me to cover the opening game of the Mariners season.
When I entered Safeco Field, I met a woman named Rebecca who works for the Mariners. Rebecca took me on a tour around Safeco Field. I went in the press room, the press box, and on the field for batting practice. When I was on the field, I met Dave Valle, Bill Krueger, Dave Sims and Angie Mentink, all of whom work for Root Sports. I also met Mark Langston, a former pitcher for the Mariners and the Angels.
Throughout the day, Doug, the cameraman from KOMO 4 News, followed me around and took shots of me going around Safeco Field. Doug took shots of me while I was in the press room, the press box, at batting practice, and during the game.
Right before the game, the Seahawks came onto the field to celebrate their Super Bowl victory, including Coach Pete Carroll, Super Bowl MVP Malcom Smith and quarterback Russell Wilson, who threw the first pitch to Mariners' starting right-handed pitcher Felix Hernandez.
During the game, Mr. Johnson sat down with me for an inning and asked me some questions. After that I took a couple of pictures with him and gave him a car. After he left, I tried to sit in the Terrace Club but it was packed. Then, after that I decided to go back to my seat and watch the rest of the game.
This was one of the greatest days of my life. Seeing the players just a couple feet away at batting practice was amazing. To be able to see the press box and the press room was incredible. The taste of the garlic fries was the best part of the night, besides Corey Hart's two home runs.
To cap off a great night the Mariners beat the Angels by the final score 5 to 3. Go Mariners!
