Sultan City Councilmember Jeffrey Beeler will challenge U.S. Rep. Suzane DelBene for Washington’s 1st Congressional District, with early election results showing the Republican candidate taking the second-most votes in the August primary.

About 149,160 votes were tallied by Thursday, not including write-ins, according to the Washington Secretary of State's office. Beeler received almost 26 percent of the votes, while DelBene has secured about 59 percent. The numbers shifted by less than a percentage from Wednesday to Thursday.

Republican attorney Scott Stafne, 69, of Arlington follows with more than 11 percent, while both unaffiliated contenders, Monroe educator Adam Pilskog, 40, and retired Redmond man Robert Mair, 64, received 2.5 percent and less than 1 percent, respectively.

DelBene and Beeler will face off in the Nov. 6 general election, with the winner taking on about 775,000 constituents within a mix of urban and rural communities throughout Skagit, Snohomish and King counties. The results will be certified on Aug. 21.
