Carlos Martinez trial starts this week

Jury selection for the trial of former Monroe Police Officer Carlos Martinez will begin at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 17, in the Snohomish County Superior Court.

Depending on how quickly jurors are selected, opening arguments could begin as soon as Tuesday afternoon. The case will be heard by Judge Michael T. Downes.

Martinez, a Monroe police officer for 20 years, resigned from the department in 2009. A D.A.R.E. officer and a member of the Monroe School Board in 2006, prosecutors allege that Martinez used his position to cultivate a sexual relationship with a young female who was a minor when the relationship first began in 2003. The victim was 14 years old.

Martinez is facing six counts of sexual misconduct with a minor, including two counts of voyeurism, two counts of child molestation in the third degree, one count of rape of a child and one count of possession of depictions of a minor engaged in sexually explicit conduct.
