Jason Bannon wasn't going to enter the Snohomish County Council art competition, but his friend encouraged him. So he made a pen drawing of Superman and submitted it. And now he is the 4th grade winner out of 87 grade level entries in the county.
County Council Clerk Kathryn Bratcher came to Chain Lake Elementary to present Jason with a framed copy of his winning artwork. Jason also won free admission to the fair this summer, along with a fair T-shirt and hat and a bag of goodies donated by the Snohomish County Parks Department. Each of his classmates received an ice cream cone-shaped bottle of bubbles.
Ten-year-old Jason first started to draw when he was two. He likes to use pen and ink. "I know if I mess up with a pen, then my whole picture is going to be messed up,GÇ¥ he says. "Pencil doesn't look as good as black and white.GÇ¥
This is the sixth year of the County Council art competition. This year's theme was "Smart Justice: Creating Safer Communities,GÇ¥ to help build awareness of all the agencies included in our local justice system, such as the jail, courts, county clerk and sheriff.
The contest was open to all students in grades K-5. Jason was one of six winners out of 180 total entries. The winning drawings will be used on the cover of the budget summary book for the county's 2014 Annual Budget.
Jason is already planning to enter next year.
