Monroe student Eli Clark has been named Sno-Isle Skills Center Auto Tech Student of the Year for the second time.
Clark sees the award as less about skill or ability and more of a character statement. "I think they choose kids who try the hardest, who have the most drive to learn, the most willingness to learn,GÇ¥ he said.
But Clark's teacher saw more than just drive and willingness to learn. "Eli was a standout student, even as a junior,GÇ¥ says his teacher at Sno-Isle, Gary Holboy. "His quality of work set him apart. I could assign him work because his attention to detail and quality of work were ready for industry. He has a really good work ethic.GÇ¥
Clark was hired after graduation at a Toyota dealership in Everett as a lube tech, and performs oil changes and light mechanic work. He wants to work for several years in the auto industry while taking online and community college classes. Eventually he hopes to pursue a career as an artist in game design.
Clark has been a student at Sky Valley Education Center.
Lacee Peterson's artistic passion propelled her to win the 3rd grade level of the Snohomish County Council Art Contest.
This is the sixth year the County Council has held an art competition. The Council
supports the contest each year because they recognize the importance of teaching kids about government and the services it provides. This year's theme was "Smart Justice: Creating Safer Communities,GÇ¥ to help build awareness of all the agencies included in our local justice system, such as the jail, courts, county clerk, and sheriff.
Lacee's drawing shows a house with a child and dog in the yard. Overhead the sun is shining, and the statement "Police help everywhereGÇ¥ is written across the sky.
"She has always liked to draw, since she was really little,GÇ¥ says Michelle Peterson, Lacee's mom. "She is naturally artistic; she hasn't taken any classes GÇô she just likes to do it.GÇ¥
Lacee received a framed copy of her winning artwork, free admission to the Washington State Fair, a fair T-shirt and hat, and a bag of prizes donated by Snohomish County Parks Department.
The contest was open to all students in grades K-5. The winning drawings will be used on the cover of the budget summary book for the 2014 Annual Budget.
