Cornell grad shares honor with MHS teacher

Monroe's Heidi Ojalehto has been named a 2016 Merrill Presidential Scholar by Cornell University, an honor given to graduating seniors who have demonstrated outstanding scholastic achievement, leadership and potential for contributing to society.

Only one percent of the spring semester graduating class receives this honor each year, each Merrill Presidential Scholar asked to recognize a high school teacher and Cornell faculty member who inspired them.

Ojalehto honored Jill Siano of Monroe High School and Barbara Koslowski in Cornell's Department of Human Development and Family Studies. Those high school teachers who receive honors are also granted a Special Teachers Are Recognized (STAR) scholarships, a one-time $4,000 scholarship in each teacher's name for a Cornell student from the teacher's high school who is in financial need.

The Merrill Presidential Scholars Program is funded by Philip Merrill, Class of 1955.
