Firefighters from Monroe's Fire District 3 and District 7 in Clearview rescued a man and three Pomeranians during a response to reports of a car off the roadway near Monroe on Friday.

The accident occurred at 1:44 p.m. on Friday, April 15, at 212th Street Southeast and Echo Lake Road, roughly a half-mile from S.R. 522.

According Public Information Officer Heather Chadwick, the driver's tires caught the edge of the pavement, causing him to lose control of his vehicle and plummet down an embankment. As crews were on their way to the scene, an off-duty Monroe firefighter stopped to help, finding the driver trapped but uninjured.

Arriving crews located the vehicle covered in trees, which they cut away to get to the driver.

As medics were evaluating him, he informed firefighters his three Pomeranians were still in the vehicle.

Firefighters returned to the vehicle and retrieved the dogs, all three uninjured.-á

"There was a happy ending to what could have been a devastating situation,GÇ¥ wrote Chadwick in a news release.
