Dreadnought Brewing is inviting customers to put their money where the beer is, by sampling the new, guest-brewed Fermented Fellowship Scottish Porter. A portion of the proceeds from each pint sold will be donated to Take the Next Step, a Monroe nonprofit dedicated to serving low-income and homeless individuals with meals and other services.
Located in the Fryelands area at 16726 146th St. S.E., Suite 153 in Monroe, Dreadnought Brewing is a family friendly restaurant and brewery that serves craft ale and freshly made sandwiches and salads. For an extra $1.50, paninis can be served with Dreadnought's custom red, white and blue potato salad, made by kitchen manager and co-owner Sandra Jordan.
In addition to the selection of craft brews, Dreadnought offers nonalcoholic root beer, homebrewed with ingredients like sarsaparilla root, cinnamon and licorice root.
Open since June, Dreadnought Brewing co-owners represent nearly all branches of the United States military, including the Army, Navy, Air Force and the Marines.
The Fermented Fellowship Scottish Porter, made by homebrewer Ken Thompkins, was the winner of Dreadnought's Take the Next Step homebrew benefit contest, held in August. Contestants were asked to submit three bottles or one growler of their best home brews, which were judged by staff from Dreadnought and Take the Next Step.
The winner was then invited to brew several kegs of their custom blend on Dreadnought's commercial brewing equipment. The winning ale is described by Dreadnought as, "a nice roasted porter that has been aged on toasted American Oak and infused with 12-year single malt scotch. At 8.2 percent and 38 IBUs, this is a nice "warmer' for the holidays.GÇ¥
The International Bittering Units scale, or IBU, measures the level of bitterness in the beer.
The new beer was released on Tuesday, Dec. 15, and will be on tap until the kegs run dry. For every pint sold, Dreadnought will donate $1 to TTNS.
Dreadnought offers gift certificates for beer enthusiasts and is hosting a two-day brewing course in January. The class takes places on Friday, Jan. 8 and Sunday, Jan. 10, and includes recipe formulation, brewing technique and instruction on fermentation. Pricing for the course is $50, or $75 for the course and the opportunity to take home five gallons of the pre-beer liquid known as "wort.GÇ¥
Attendees who don't have their own container can pay $100 for the course, the wort and a glass "carboyGÇ¥ to keep it in as it ferments.
