Dyami on Sports: A league that brings miracles

By Dyami Seehorn
Every Saturday afternoon right by the Boys and Girls Club, there is a baseball league called Miracle League. Miracle League is for handicapped people and is run by the YMCA. Kids with any disabilities can play. There is no losing team because their philosophy is to have fun and that everybody is a winner.
Danielle Warner has been volunteering for Miracle League for 10 years.
"I saw an article in the Monroe Monitor and saw the first game of the season; since then I never left,GÇ¥ Warner said. Warner is a coach and takes care of all of the bats.
"I love doing this every week because every kid feeds my soul,GÇ¥ Warner said.

I have been playing Miracle League baseball for nine years now and it's amazing how they put it together. Each player gets a buddy to help them get the ball if the ball is hit their way while playing defense, or bat and run if at bat. There are different buddies every week. Among the people who help volunteer are people from the East County Senior Center, the Monroe High School baseball team, The Monroe Rotary Club, the Sky Valley Little League and the Monroe High School softball team.
They even use a special ball for the blind, when they bat. There is a switch on the ball to turn it on and off. When the ball is turned on it will continuously beep at a rapid pace. The pitcher tosses the ball while the ball beeps, the hitter swings as the beeping sound gets closer. After the hitter hits the ball, the pitcher throws a normal baseball behind his back so that the fielders can get it.
Every final game of the year, the Monroe Fire Department comes out and helps volunteer and after the game they get out the grill and barbecue. They also bring the fire truck to show the kids what they do every day.
Come out and see a special ballgame in the near future.
